What a white screen is good for

Soft light

A bright white or warm white screen makes a handy fill light for video calls, selfies, product photos or reading in the dark.

Screen checks

Pure white shows dead pixels, dust, smudges and uneven brightness. Black reveals backlight bleed and stuck pixels.

Cleaning

Switch between white and black while you clean: smudges show on white, dust and streaks catch the light on black.

Color and tracing

Use red as a dim night light that is easy on dark-adapted eyes, any custom color as a backdrop, or white as a lightbox for tracing.

How to use the full-screen white screen

  1. Pick a color (white is the default) and, if you like, a lower brightness or the clock.
  2. Press Open White Screen. The page goes fullscreen and the controls fade out after a couple of seconds.
  3. Adjust on the fly. Press ← → or swipe to change color, ↑ ↓ to change brightness and C for the clock. Move the mouse or long-press to show the controls.
  4. Exit with Esc or the Exit button.

Tip: for the brightest light, raise your screen's own brightness to maximum; the brightness steps here can only dim the color.

Need a black screen instead?

For a full black screen, a black screen with the time, or an OLED display that looks switched off, use the black screen. It opens on pure black with an optional dim clock.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make my screen completely white?

Press Open White Screen. The page switches to your browser's fullscreen mode and fills the whole display with pure white. The controls fade away after a couple of seconds, and Esc or the Exit button returns you to the page.

Can I use a white screen as a light?

Yes. Turn your screen brightness up and open the white screen to use it as a soft fill light for video calls, photos or reading. Warm white is gentler on the eyes, and the brightness steps let you dim it without changing your system settings.

Will my screen turn off while the white screen is open?

In browsers that support the Screen Wake Lock API, such as Chrome, Edge and Safari, the page keeps your screen awake while it is open. In other browsers, your system's sleep settings still apply.

Can a white screen help find dead pixels and dust?

Yes. On a pure white screen, dead pixels show up as black dots and dust or smudges stand out clearly. For a complete check, use the dead pixel test, which also cycles through black, red, green and blue.
