About Dead Pixel Testing
Dead Pixel Testing is a small, independent set of free screen tests. It helps you check a new or used monitor, laptop, TV, tablet or phone for defects in minutes, before the return window closes, without installing anything.
Every test runs entirely in your web browser. Nothing about your screen or your results is uploaded, and there are no accounts or sign-ups.
The tools
- Dead pixel test: Full-screen colors to find dead, stuck and hot pixels.
- Stuck pixel fixer: Flash a stuck pixel with rapid color noise to try to revive it.
- Backlight bleed test: Dark-room screens for bleed, IPS glow, clouding and blooming.
- OLED burn-in test: Gray levels and gradients that reveal burn-in, banding and tint.
How the tests work
Pure, full-screen colors. Each test screen is a single exact color, such as pure red #FF0000 or 50% gray #808080, shown in your browser's native fullscreen mode so nothing else is lit. A pixel that doesn't match its neighbors stands out immediately.
Controls that get out of the way. Toolbars and hints fade out after a couple of seconds so they never cover the pixels you are inspecting. You can navigate with a mouse, keyboard, touch gestures or a TV remote.
Pixel-exact flashing. The stuck pixel fixer draws one noise dot per physical screen pixel, so every sub-pixel under the box is driven independently, at up to 60 frames per second.
Honest limits. Your browser, operating system and display settings (night light, HDR, color profiles, auto-brightness) can change what reaches the panel. Refresh rate is estimated from animation timing. And software can reveal problems and sometimes free stuck pixels, but it cannot repair dead pixels, backlight bleed or burn-in.
